This is evident in its most dominant form in the monument of love, the incomparable Taj Mahal. Fine pieces of semi-precious stones embedded on marble surface , a technique known as pietra dura, have beautified the Taj Mahal. The decorative value that they have added to the mammoth structure is bridal make-up. Inlay work, particularly on marble, where it takes the name of pietra dura generated a lot of debate as far as its origin is concerned. Many believe it to be typically Italian in origin but some contend it to of Indian origin but the accomplished Indian craftsmen adapted it to their needs, gave it an indigenous touch and used the technique to carve out traditional Indian motifs that are today the crown of Indian art. Available ONLY in Agra. Inlay Process: The method of inlay is as follows: a) Marble surface is painted with temporary red color so that the outline pattern drawn and cavity on it is visible. b) Semi-precious stones available in the form of rocks are sliced with a wire-saw having one to eight tensed wires. Carborundum powder and water frequently put on the rock while slicing it so that the wires cut through smoothly and quickly. c)Slices of semi-precious stones are shaped against a rotating disc called emery powder wheel made from Carborundum, shellac and coarse sand. The craftsman holds the stones in the finger tips of left hand, drive the disc with the bow by the right hand, frequently pour water on the disc and thus shapes the stones in desired design from Taj. d) This set of shaped stone is then placed forming the pattern on the painted surface of the subject marble piece and their outlines are marked with scriber. e) The stones are then laid aside and marble is chiseled with the female and male chisel to prepare exact cavities to receive shaped stone ( which were laid aside after marking the outlines) according to which the cavities are prepared. f) Once the cavity for the shaped pieces is ready then it is filled with a cement having old recipe (same recipe was used at the time of Taj) and then the shaped pieces of the semi-precious stones are pressed and are felt to set in. g) The stones inlaid make an uneven surface on the marble. They are sanded down (with river sand & water) to an even level. h) In the last phase surface of the marble is washed and rubbed with a wet swab of muslin to give the surface a fine gloss.
